Florida Statues 633.027 & Florida Administrative Code 69A-60.0081 requires the placement of an identifying symbol on structures constructed with light frame truss component in a manner sufficient to warn persons conducting fire control and other emergency operations of the existence of light frame truss type construction in the structure.

This is for any commercial, industrial, or multi-unit residential structure of three (3) units or more, (excluding townhouses). This requirement became effective on December 13, 2009.

Structures with lightweight truss floor and roof systems roofs shall be marked with the letters “RF”. (Figure A).

Structures with lightweight truss roofs shall be marked with the letter “R”. (Figure B).

Structures with lightweight truss floors shall be marked with the letter “F”. (Figure C)

  • Symbols must be all weather and contrasting with background.
  • Maltese Cross shall measure 8 inches horizontally and 8 inches vertically.
  • Maltese Cross shall be a bright red reflective color.
  • Maltese Cross shall be within 24 inches to the left of the main entry.
  • Maltese Cross shall be not less than 4 feet above grade, walking surface, finished floor.
  • Maltese Cross shall be not more than 6 feet above grade, walking surface, finished floor.
  • Additional signs to be installed as determined by the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
